Last year global carbon dioxide emissions reached a record high, which makes it crucial to stabilise the earth’s climate to avoid more dangerous climate change.
MTG has an on-going environmental agenda and as part of this participates in different environmental projects and surveys. Last year, MTG entered the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) after a test run in 2009, to publicly disclose greenhouse gas emissions and climate change strategies. CDP is an independent not-for-profit organisation which holds the world’s largest database of primary corporate climate change information (roughly 3,000 organisations in 60 countries participates) as well as being the only global climate change reporting system.
In 2010 MTG scored 62 on carbon disclosure – improving its score by 44% from 2009. This year MTG’s carbon disclosure was 70; 11% better than last year. The carbon disclosure scoring is normalised to a 100 point scale, and assesses companies on the quality and completeness of their disclosures. MTG’s disclosure score of 70 indicates a “growing maturity in understanding and managing company-specific risks and potential opportunities related to climate change”, as well as “good evidence of ability to measure and manage carbon footprint across global operations”. MTG is also being complimented about its transparency, something crucial to this year’s tougher measurements by CDP.
In carbon performance MTG scored a D, on a scale from A-E, where A is the best. No company’s performance on environmental matters is revealed unless their disclosure score is above 50. The relatively low score indicates that it is still early days for MTG’s environmental efforts, but that responding to CDP has helped the Group identify risks and opportunities arising from climate change, and to set reduction targets and action plans for its environmental work.
After all – you can’t manage what you don’t measure. To find out more about CDP and if you wish to read the report, please follow the link: www.cdproject.net.
