RIX FM entertains three million listeners in Sweden every week with music, news, humour and a huge portion of fun.
The brand RIX FM – with the tagline “The best music just now” – was introduced to radio listeners in Sweden on 14 February 1999.
Three years earlier – on 29 January 1996 – Sweden’s biggest commercial radio network had been created by the merger of MTG’s radio network P6 and the Radio Rix network, controlled by Svensk Radioutveckling, SRU.
When Sweden introduced commercial radio in 1993 the available frequencies were auctioned out. MTG was still not formed; the business area that became MTG, and later today’s MTG, was called Kinnevik TV & Media. Kinnevik acquired a number of frequencies and initially, in October 1993, launched the radio network Z-Radio. It was renamed P6 in May 1995 – and after the merger with SRU it became Radio Rix in January 1996.
Since February 1999 it has been called RIX FM.
In January 2002 the next step in the consolidation of the Swedish commercial radio market took place when MTG acquired RTL Group’s radio stations: Lugna Favoriter and Wow 105.5 in Stockholm. RIX FM in Stockholm was moved to the 105.5 frequency.
In September 2004 the consolidation process went even further when MTG, after signing a cooperation agreement with NRJ Group S.A., rebranded ten of the NRJ stations in Sweden to RIX FM stations.
In August 2005 yet another step in the consolidation took place when MTG commenced cooperation with Norrköpings Radio & Co AB. The cooperation resulted in RIX FM and Lugna Favoriter adding two Norrköpings Radio & Co AB owned radio stations each in the Swedish county of Östergötland.
In the fall of 2008 SRU decided to leave the partnership with MTG Radio. RIX FM though maintains its position as the biggest commercial radio network in Sweden with 30 stations. The most popular programme is the morning show RIX Morron Zoo with close to one million listeners every day.
